BERR has a commitment to raise the self-employment rate of under-represented ethnic minorities relative to that of other groups.
In 2000 the Ethnic Minority Business Forum was created to advise government on policies and practices as they relate to ethnic minority business across England. In December 2005, the Forum, chaired by Adeeba Malik, produced an action plan ‘The Way Forward 2005 – 2008’. In March 2006 the Forum hosted the ‘Race for Enterprise’ conference. This demonstrated the role played by national and local bodies from schools and Local Authorities, Regional Development Agencies and Department of Work and Pensions. The forum also held an event on 29 January 2007 to draw attention to the business opportunities of the 2012 Games.
