On 6 November the terms “Government”, “NHS”, “HSC” and “HPSS” were added to the list of words and expressions for which a company must have the approval of the Secretary of State before registering under a name that includes any of them. Also any person carrying on business, whether or not incorporated, must have the Secretary of State's approval before carrying on business under such a name.
Sheffield is well-established as a badge of quality. It is an offence to use the word in a way that is detrimental to the reputation or distinctive character of the certification trademark “Sheffield”. It makes sense therefore to require approval before it is used in a company’s registered name or in a business name.
We consulted on whether the continued inclusion of “Sheffield” would be necessary to protect the public.
We have received representations that convinced us that there is a risk of harm to the public from the unrestricted use of the word “Sheffield” in company and business names.
