Diversity Strategy

BERR Diversity Statement

'Promoting Equality, Valuing Diversity'

The BERR Operating Committee and Management Board agreed the Department’s revised Diversity Strategy in September 2008. This is the second diversity strategy and builds on the success of the earlier 2006-8 strategy. The 2008 - 2011 Strategy reflects the cross –government diversity and equality priorities set by the Cabinet Office and aims to tackle those issues identified as key by staff and stakeholders.

Proposed actions are based on a number of key themes and pressure points for the Department that needed to be addressed in relation to

  • representation of women, ethnic minorities and disabled staff in senior levels (Band C and above)
  • changing behaviour to create an inclusive culture
  • building on strong leadership and accountability for diversity
  • talent management – bringing in and bringing on people from different backgrounds
  • mainstreaming diversity and equality considerations in management, operations and in policy development

Improving the Diversity of BERR is one of the key requirement of the BERR Capability Review, falling under Work stream 3 (Developing our people).
