Welcome to the Office for Nuclear Development (OND).
From these webpages you can find out about the Government’s policy on nuclear energy and work currently underway in the OND.
The aim of the OND is to facilitate new nuclear investment in the UK.
The Nuclear Development Forum, chaired by Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, is holding its second meeting today Tuesday 27th January. The Forum, which meets three times a year, is attended by senior representatives from the nuclear industry including vendors, operators, key suppliers, contractors and unions involved in the industry, and Government.
One year on from the publication of the White Paper (Meeting the energy challenge: a white paper on nuclear power 2008), Ed Miliband has announced several key milestones in the development of new nuclear build. These include:
Mark Higson, Chief Executive, Office for Nuclear Development also took the opportunity to update the forum on progress made since the Nuclear White Paper.
The Government has also today published its response to the consultation on the process for Strategic Siting Assessment (SSA) including the final SSA criteria and next steps for nominators to nominate sites for potential new nuclear power stations. Nominations are due by 31st March 2009.
The Government response is available here.
If you responded to the SSA criteria consultation, you can view your response on-line.
A leaflet ‘New Nuclear Power Stations – How Sites Will Be Chosen and How You Can Have Your Say’ is also being issued today and will be available from the site: www.nuclearpowersiting.decc.gov.uk
In January 2008, following publication of the White Paper on Nuclear Power the Government asked Dr Tim Stone to conduct a review of nuclear regulation. Dr Stone has now reported his findings, and today, 27 January 2009, we are publishing the Summary Recommendations and the Government’s Response to the review.
We are also publishing today an updated indicative timeline for the new nuclear build programme. It sets out at a strategic level how the key parts of the new nuclear programme fit together, including activity being led by DECC, the regulators, National Grid and others.
To make it easier for the public to understand how they can “have their say” in the new nuclear programme we are also issuing today a Consultations Map. It will explain in simple terms what the key new nuclear consultation and other public facing exercises will be, when they will happen, and how they feed into the wider programme.
A nuclear skills map detailing the skills landscape in the UK is also being issued today.
In line with one year on from the publication of the Nuclear White Paper, the Office for Nuclear Development is also issuing today an assessment report to recognise the milestones achieved and identify the challenges ahead.
