Science Budget

The Government is substantially increasing spending on science. Between 1997 and 2007 the science budget will have more than doubled, rising to £3.4 billion. This has enabled the Research Councils to substantially raise their support for research and make a major start repairing the scientific infrastructure.

The announcement on 7 March 2005 breaks down the three years of Government spending on science (2005-08). Total spend will top £10 billion, reaching £3.4 billion in 2007-08. The publication, Science Budget Allocations 2005-06 to 2007-08, published on 26 May 2005, breaks down the three years of Government spending on science (2005-08).

Alongside these allocations a new Performance Management System has been implemented for the Research Councils. More effective performance management will enable DIUS to measure better the contribution of the Science Budget to meeting the PSA target and to the UK Research Base as a whole. DIUS and the Research Council's have developed Output Frameworks to measure progress towards deliverables set out in their scorecards.
