Our Export Control Services

Confused by export control? The Export Control Organisation provides a number of services to help exporters navigate the regulations so that they understand their responsibilities, are informed about their options in applying for licences and export responsibly.

Our services are:

Providing an efficient and responsible licensing system

  • Our main objective is to process licence applications for strategic military or dual-use goods.
All licence applications are made via the SPIRE website.
ECO has clearly defined targets and objectives. Find out more in About the ECO and Export Licensing Application Statistics
Find out more about Licences and the obligations of exporters.

Licensing and Rating Advice

  • We provide 2 web-based search databases that are designed to help exporters identify whether they need an export licence for their products/goods and whether they may be able to use an Open General Export Licence. These are:
    Goods Checker
This online database enables you to search (by keyword) for an entry that specifies your goods, software or technology in the current export control list (the listing of controlled goods for which export licences are required).

    OGEL Checker
If you know that your goods require an export licence and know the 'rating' (Control List entry) for your goods, you can use this online database to search for any Open General Export Licences (OGELs) that you may be able to use.
Note: For more details see the Licences page for information about OGELs and other types of licence.

This is an advisory service provided by ECO's Technical Assessment Unit (TAU). If you not sure whether you need an export licence, TAU is on hand to help you rate your goods (In other words to decide whether your goods are controlled or subject to sanctions and if you need a licence).

You need to complete a rating request on the SPIRE website, remembering to provide the necessary technical and specification details.
