North Sea Basin Taskforce

On 30 November 2005 it was agreed to establish a North Sea Basin Task Force (NSBTF), composed of public and private bodies from countries on the rim of the North Sea. Its mandate is to develop common principles for managing and regulating the transport, injection and permanent storage of CO2 in the North Sea sub-seabed; and that these principles should enable cost-effective and environmentally responsible operations.

Membership is made up of:

UK Membership

  • BERR
  • Defra
  • BGS
  • BP
  • Shell

Norway Membership

  • The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy
  • The Ministry of the Environment
  • DnV
  • Statoil
  • Hydro

In October 2007 the Netherlands Government were invited to join the Taskforce - with invitation for both Government and Industry nominations.

The recommended Common Principles for the group include the need for activities to be soundly based, publicly stated, instil public confidence and provide predictability for stakeholders; to recognise states’ sovereignty and existing rights under international law; and to take account of environmental, health, safety and other public concerns.

North Sea CO2 transport and storage Infrastructure Study Summary

This study was commissioned by Mr Brown and Mr Stoltenberg in June 2006. The work of the study team is now complete and approved by the NSBTF.
