The Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (ESPRC) has three major initiatives in nuclear fission research:
More information on UK fission research is available from the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) website. The UKERC mission is to be the UK's pre-eminent centre of research, and source of authoritative information and leadership, on sustainable energy systems.
Participation in European Research is available under the Euratom Framework Programme. The latest Framework Programme, FP7, started on 1 January 2007. EC Funding for research in FP7 Euratom Fission is €287 million, an increase from €190 million available under the last CORDIS: Sixth Framework Programme. More details can be found on BERR's FP7 UK website.
GIF research is focused on the development of Generation IV advanced reactor systems for international deployment in 2030 and beyond. The UK has non-active (observer) status in GIF. UK research organisations can participate in GIF research via the Euratom Framework Programme (Euratom is an active member of GIF).
For more information on the Generation IV International Forum, see their website.
