Nuclear Safety

The Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform is accountable to Parliament for safety at nuclear power stations and other licensed civil nuclear sites in the UK. The Secretary of State is advised on nuclear safety issues by the independent Health and Safety Commission (HSC), which has statutory responsibility for ensuring that there is an adequate framework for the regulation of health and safety across most industry sectors, including the UK nuclear industry. A summary of ministerial responsibilities (and those of other organisations) for nuclear safety can be found on the Responsibilities and Ministerial Accountability pages of this section of the website.
