Security Of Energy Supply

In the short term, the Government's security of supply work covers understanding, and then working collectively to minimise, the risks of a physical unplanned interruption in energy supplies.

In the longer term, it covers the range of policies needed to help bring about uninterrupted energy supply - notably promoting domestic and international energy market liberalisation, diversity of energy sources, international energy dialogue and the provision of timely and accurate information to the market.

BERR and Ofgem monitor energy security in the UK gas and electricity markets through the Joint Energy Security of Supply Working Group (JESS) which published its last report on 13 December 2006.

In terms of the longer term security of supply issues, the Government published a statement on the need for additional gas supply infrastructure on 16 May 2006 which is available below:

The Government also published The Effectiveness of Current Gas Security of Supply Arrangements: a Consultation in October 2006, responding in May 2007.
