The Southern Corridor is a planned energy supply route from the Caspian region, through Turkey and into Europe. This could comprise a TransCaspian pipeline from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan, and also the planned Nabucco gas pipeline to run from Turkey, through Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary and terminating in Austria.
This energy transit route was endorsed at the 2007 European Spring Council as a means of diversifying its energy sources and routes to Caspian and Central Asian suppliers. Gaining access to such resources will help increase the EU’s resilience to any disruptions in energy supply.
Malcolm Wicks, Minister of State for Energy, completed a visit to Turkey, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan in September 2007. He had meetings with the Turkmen and Azeri presidents, the Turkish Energy Minister as well as other key ministers and energy business representatives. We are now working closely with business partners and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) to build on the links made during this visit and develop our cooperation with the governments of Turkey and the Caspian region countries. The Southern Corridor could enable these countries to diversify their energy economies, while helping the EU to improve its energy security.
