Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) is a tried and tested method of enabling companies to obtain knowledge, technology or skills which they consider to be of strategic competitive importance, from the further/higher education sector or from a research and technology organisation. The knowledge sought is embedded into the company via a project or projects undertaken by a good quality individual recruited for the purpose and working in the company.

The process enables a company to choose a partner from the UK knowledge base (a university or college for example) with the required knowledge and they jointly prepare a proposal for a project or projects to enhance the business. The partners submit an application for funding to the Technology Strategy Board, which approves proposals as appropriate on behalf of all the funding organisations.

Funding contributes towards the knowledge base partner's cost of participation, while the business pays the rest.

Successful Knowledge Transfer Partnerships have been operating for many years. The benefits are evident. During 2005/06, companies involved in KTP reported an average one-off increase in profit before tax of £78,000 and an average increase in annual profit before tax after the project had completed of £291,000. Average investment in plant and machinery was £223,000.
