Additional information on the business support announced in the Pre-Budget Report

The initial response to the consultation on Simplifying Business Support -

Word document (24KB)

- sets out how decisions announced in the Pre-Budget report have taken into account views expressed by respondents to our consultation which closed on 14 September.

The summaries at the links below supplement the initial response and provide detail on the business support which has been approved through the Pre-Budget Report. Areas we consulted on which are not covered here will be dealt with in the full response to the consultation which will be published in December.

What are these summaries?

These summaries define the broad areas where the Government believes there is a case for business support intervention. They summarise the rationale identified for intervening and the nature of the support to be provided.

How have decisions about business support been made?

In identifying those areas where Government believes there is a strong case for intervention, we have used the following criteria:

  • Rationale – whether there is a market failure or wider social welfare justification for intervening;
  • Likely effectiveness – whether the intervention envisaged will address the objective;
  • Business need – whether there is a genuine demand from business for the type of support offered.

Are these the things that business will see?

The summaries identify objectives the public sector has for providing support. Further work will be done to determine how the schemes that business see should be delivered, branded, monitored and evaluated.
