Army Rugby Union Referees Society (ARURS)
Season 2008-2009

Chairman's welcome to the Army Rugby Union Referees Society

Maj Gen Roddy Porter MBEWelcome to the Army Rugby Union Referees' Society (ARURS) web site. If you are a Society member or not, there is plenty of interest here. Founded in 1921, the Society has been a vital part of the Army Rugby Union (ARU) ever since. Today, we are a vibrant Society with over 300 members in UK, Germany and Cyprus; indeed, wherever rugby is played in the Army an ARURS member will not be far away. The ARURS is also a member of the Combined Services Rugby Referees' Federation (CSRR) a formal Constituent Body in the Rugby Football Union (RFU).

Our aims are fourfold:

  • To promote and develop rugby refereeing in the Army.
  • To provide referees for the Army.
  • To provide referees for the three Services.
  • Where appropriate, to provide referees for civilian societies and other bodies affiliated to the RFU.

Put simply, we aim to ensure that every game of rugby planned in the Army has a qualified Service referee appointed to it. I am proud to be Chairman of this dedicated Society. We have excellent qualified coaches, assessors and administrators who put a great deal into running our affairs and supporting Army rugby.

Many of us took up refereeing after a full playing career, or one cut short by injury. Others have joined us at a relatively young age, whilst still playing or having never played. Rugby refereeing in the Army is open to all serving soldiers (men and women and regardless of rank) who enjoy the game and want to try the challenge of being 'the ref'. Indeed, with the ever-increasing popularity of women's rugby, I hope that many more Army women will decide to take up the whistle.

We will train you (you need no previous knowledge of the Laws - indeed many players don't have any!!) and the Entry Level Referee Award (ELRA - all our courses are developed by the RFU) offers an outstanding introduction into the refereeing of rugby union and will equip you with the core skills you need. If you take it up, we will provide you with free ARURS refereeing kit after completing your first five games in your first season. After that, we will manage your refereeing career, coaching and developing your skills to whatever level you wish and can attain. Some of our people have reached national standards, whilst many others simply enjoy sub-unit or unit games, 7s, 10s or 15s. Many of our people also join civilian societies as well. Once qualified, you can take it as far as you want.

Not only that, you will enjoy getting to know your fellow referees and many players Army-wide. You will find on this web site details of all our courses, our social events and rugby refereeing opportunities. Enjoy browsing our pages and, if you have never tried refereeing, why don't you sign up for a course and see what it's like? You can contact any of us for more information.

I hope to see you 'in the middle' soon.
