Families' health care

Most military families stationed in the United Kingdom get National Heath Service medical and dental care. Overseas, Service agreements usually provide healthcare for military families and Ministry of Defence civilians.

Family doctor

United Kingdom
Most military families register with a National Health Service doctor, although in some locations families can register with a military practice.

Overseas
All military families overseas receive family doctor services from military medical centres.


Hospital care

United Kingdom
The National Health Service provides hospital care for military families in the United Kingdom.

Germany
One of the five German Provider Hospitals usually provides hospital care for military families in Germany

Cyprus
The Princess Mary's Hospital in Akrotiri provides hospital care for military families in Cyprus.

Gibraltar
A small local military hospital provides hospital care for military families in Gibraltar.

Other overseas locations
Local hospitals provide routine and emergency treatment in Belize, Brunei, Nepal and the Falkland Islands. More complicated treatment may involve a flight to a neighbouring country or back to the UK for treatment at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in Birmingham.


Dental care

United Kingdom
Military families in the UK receive dental care from civilian dentists.

Overseas
Military families overseas receive dental care from the Defence Dental Agency.


Maternity Care

United Kingdom
The National Health Service provides maternity care for military families in the United Kingdom.

Germany
The British Forces (Germany) Health Service provides all maternity care except delivery. All babies in Germany are delivered in German hospitals which have expertise in dealing with the British population.

Cyprus and Gibraltar
Military or SSAFA (The Soldiers', Sailors' And Airmen's Families Association) midwives provide maternity care for military families in Cyprus and Gibraltar.

Other overseas locations
A decision is made early in the pregnancy about whether to use local facilities or to return to the United Kingdom.


Vaccinations

When a family accompanies a soldier posted overseas, they should consult their family doctor about which vaccinations they need.
