What Will You Do If You Join?
The unit attempts to provide varied and challenging training, reflecting the variety of activities pursued by the Regular and Territorial Army. The training is hard but it is also fun-
First Year students are generally assigned to A Company where they follow a recruit syllabus similar to that of other soldiers in the TA. This includes instruction in First Aid, radio communications, navigation, fieldcraft, minor tactics and weapon handling, including live firing with the 5.56mm Individual and Light Support Weapons. Just before Easter of their First Year, company members sit the IVITO 1 (Military Training Qualification Stage 1) exam which comprises a variety of practical and theory tests and proves that they have basic military knowledge and skills. Those who try pass,
Second Year students progress into B Company, continuing to deepen their military knowledge and leadership skills leading to the MTQ 2 exam.
Owens Company comprises those students who have completed the above two stages. They continue to deepen their knowledge of the Army, whilst also, where applicable, expanding their skills in Adventurous Pursuits and management techniques, by attendance on Regular Army courses in Wales and Scotland and by attachments and visits to other units.
Training standards are high. For the last two years the unit has entered the gruelling Cambrian Patrol Competition, held annually on the rugged Sennybridge Training area in Wales. This year's team carried away a Silver Medal and was one of only four teams to even complete the course

Cambrian Patrol Team |
Every year there is a 15 day Annual Camp which offers the opportunity to develop military skills, both on the personal and collective levels, working up to large exercises of several days in length, sometimes with assistance from the regular forces in the form of helicopters and other military machinery.
Annual Camp also presents the chance to develop adventurous training skills -Camp '97 included kayaking and hill-walking in the Scottish Highlands, while Camp'98 included mountain climbing, pot-holing and sea-kayaking.

Adventurous Training |
The unit also fields men's and women's teams to challenge other OTC's at Football, Rugby and Hockey. We're not always wildly successful here, but occasionally it's the taking part that really matters and sport is a good opportunity to meet and speak with undergraduates from other universities-
