Schools

Wellington School

Wellington School is housed in a well-converted building with spacious classrooms and a modern hall. There is a fully equipped ICT suite, a well stocked library, reading room, music room and three large shared activity areas equipped with computers.

The playground areas surrounding the building are large and contain a fenced ball game area and an attractive garden. There is an extensive programme of playground improvements planned.

At present there are 199 children on roll with a further 63 children in our two Foundation Stage 1 settings, one of which is adjacent to the school and one in the village of Lotte. Children may attend the FS1 settings the term after their 3 rd birthday whilst the main school caters for children from 4 – 8. All three of our settings are generously staffed and well resourced.

If you would like to know more about our school, please do call in and see us or contact us by telephone 0541 960 2665 (Osn Mil 2665) or e-mail sce.wellington@sceschools.com

Derby Middle School

Derby School is an age 8 to 13 middle school. On average there are 300 pupils on roll; each year group varies in size from two to three classes. The youngest pupils being in Year 4 and the oldest complete Year 8. The school serves the military community in Osnabrück, and over the years has taken a small number of fee-paying pupils, usually from the German community.

Our parent unit, currently 21 Engr Regt, provides support and guidance to the school by leading the School Guidance Committee. Further support to the school is provided through our very successful Parent Teacher Association.

Pupils transfer to this purpose-built school set in extensive grounds, from the two First Schools at the end of the school year in which they reach the age of 8. Buses are provided from all housing areas. Pupils transfer to Prince Rupert school to begin Year 9.

Registration

To register pupils at Derby School, parents should contact the School Secretary on Osn Mil 2452 or Civ (0541) 960 2452. Registration can take place at most times during the school day but parents should make an appointment in advance to avoid disappointment. Advanced warning helps the school to make key staff available to meet with families.

The school attaches great importance to its pupil induction policy, and works hard to settle pupils into the school as quickly as possible. For example, pupils are matched up with a pupil buddy on the first day, and are encouraged to get to know the school as quickly as possible (one activity involves new pupils working through the school website with their buddy). Parents should make every effort to bring pupil documents with them to the registration interviews. Schools are required to transfer important information as pupils move from one school to another using the Common Transfer File. Information on this type will help teachers at Derby School to work more effectively with new pupils.

Prince Rupert School

Prince Rupert School is an 11-18 comprehensive school catering for all abilities up to and including university entrance. Students from Osnabrück normally transfer to Prince Rupert School from Derby Middle School at the end of year 8. However, students who arrive in Osnabrück during year 7 or 8 who have already started secondary school elsewhere may apply to transfer direct to Prince Rupert School. Students from Osnabrück attend Prince Rupert School as weekly boarders arriving Monday morning

When parents arrive on station with children of secondary age they will need to complete an application form (SCE 3001), available from the Unit Welfare Office or directly from the school. Parents should contact the school to arrange an admission appointment. This is essential to ensure that the right personnel are available to complete the admission procedure. At least one parent should accompany the child at the admission appointment and they should bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate, the last school report and information on National Curriculum levels. The previous school should have provided this latter piece of information unless the child is transferring from a school outside England or Wales.

The HCSO should be contacted to obtain information with regard to school transport. General information about particular courses, or advice about the education of secondary school children may be sought from the Headteacher. Appointments and further information can be obtained by telephoning 05751 970320 (Mil 84 2320). A further useful source of information is the school’s website address: www.princerupert.de.

Marlborough School

Marlborough is a 4-8 First school with approximately 230 pupils currently on roll. The school is one of three schools serving the military community of Osnabruck.

Our parent unit is 1 Battalion REME. The pupils come mainly from families of Service personnel and some civilians who are attached to the Garrison.

The school is a single storey purpose built unit, constructed in 1952, situated in the local environment and is not within a barracks setting.

The school has recently benefited from a newly appointed ICT suite. Data projectors and whiteboards, some of which are interactive are in each classroom. The playground area has been completely refurbished providing children with an excellent play and outside learning environment.

Pupils are currently admitted into the main school from Foundation Stage 1 settings in the September following their fourth birthday. Children transfer to Derby Middle School in the September following their eighth birthday.

Five pre-schools currently serve 3 and 4 year olds in the Osnabruck Garrison. These are line managed by Marlborough and Wellington Schools. They are based in Imphal, Roberts, Mercer and Prestatyn Barracks. The fifth is based in Lotte. A Foundation Stage Co-ordinator from each school is a fully qualified teacher and supports the staff in each setting. If you would like to know more about our school, please do call in and see us or contact us by telephone on 0541 960 2925 (Osn Mil 2925).

Childminding

Woolwich Barracks in Osnabrück now has an AWS Childminding Co-ordinator who is very keen to promote the service which is available to both male and female dependants. If you are keen to work from home, have a genuine interest in children and would like to find out more on how to become a childminder, then please give Jane a call on (0541) 960 2674 or pop in for a chat. A grant of up to £250 is made available to any person who becomes a registered childminder and your registration will be recognised in the UK. Jane is based in the HIVE office, Woolwich Barracks, and the office opening hours are 8.30am – 1.30pm Monday to Friday. She will be more than happy to offer advice on any aspect of childminding, which is in great demand within the military network in Germany.

Scouts/Guides etc

Contact details for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Rainbows, Brownies and Guides can be obtained from HIVES, Unit Welfare Offices or the GYCO (Osn Mil 2465).
