Lieutenant Colonel Steve Hopper joined D Company 7LI in 1983. Whilst at University he attended RMAS (TA) in 1987 and was subsequently commissioned into 7th Bn The (Durham) Light Infantry. He initially served as a rifle platoon commander before subsequent appointments as OC Anti-Tanks, Rifle Company 2IC and OC RRTT. During this period he attended annual training in Germany, USA, Gibraltar and the UK.
Lt Col Hopper subsequently moved to Northumbria Universities OTC in 1997 and served as an advanced instructor assisting MTQ2 training and qualification. On conclusion of the Strategic Defence Review, in 1999 he moved to the newly formed Tyne-Tees Regiment as OC (DLI) Company located at Bishop Auckland and attended annual training in Romania and the UK. Whilst in post he was mobilised for OP TELIC 2 in June 2003 in order to command the TYNE TEES Company, which deployed to Iraq to provide force protection for various elements of 3 Division.
In Dec 2004 Lt Col Hopper was appointed as Second in Command of TYNE TEES and completed TACSC in 2005 before the Regiment was disbanded and the 5th Bn The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers formed on 31st March 2006. In Feb 2007 he moved to 15 (NE) Bde HQ as SO2 G7 Training before taking command of the battalion on 02 Nov 2007.
Lt Col Hopper works as a Senior General Manager for Calsonic Kansei with board level responsibility for manufacturing operations in 5 locations across Europe. He lives in Durham with wife Deborah and son Tim
