Welcome to Shishapangma 2007
"Courage is not a gift......
but the simple and brutal application of willpower"
Field Marshal the Lord Slim, and no mean soldier, considered it as the foremost of all character qualities; he was in my humble opinion not wrong. Sir Chris Bonington and fellow climber Doug Scott are no strangers to this challenge. Their achievements both on and off the mountains are legends in our lifetime and their support to this adventure heartfelt.
To the young men who will form the summit teams that attempt Shisha Pangma who if successful, will have by dint of their own convictions, selfless team spirit, hard endeavours, strong courage and the support of others will have looked down from over 8,000metres on our fragile earth, and been for a moment in time, where others fear to tread. I will go to my grave envious of their achievements but glad to have shared their company.
In 2007 the Army Mountaineering Association (AMA) will celebrate its 50th anniversary. To commemorate this event, the AMA is planning a number of expeditions to various mountainous regions, representing a diverse spread of climbing disciplines. The flagship venture within this programme is the AMA’s ski-mountaineering expedition to Shishapangma in Tibet. This ski-mountaineering expedition is also a British first.
