Contract Storage of Furniture Within the UK on Posting Overseas

General

Storage for personnel who are posted overseas is controlled at Div HQ's in the United Kingdom.

What can be moved to store & stored at public expense?

All normal items of furniture, furnishings and personal household effects may be removed and stored at public expense, including small outdoor items, but there are certain exclusions such as:

Garden sheds (collapsed or not)

Rigid swimming pools

Motor vehicles - including caravans, trailers, horse boxes and motor cycles or scooters

Greenhouses

Large rigid/play equipment

How much can I put into store?

If you wish, you may place all your possessions into store. However, the Army will only pay for the removal and storage costs for up to and including 2,4OO cubic feet (67.92 cu m). This figure of course must not include any of the items mentioned at paragraph 2 above.

Extra costs

Any extra costs arising from the insurance, removal and/or storage of articles of special character (eg concert pianos, valuable paintings, antiques) remain the responsibility of the Service person and will not be paid from public funds. It should be noted that such items are not necessarily excluded from the Storage Contract - it is the extra costs of preparation, packing and insurance that remains the Service person's responsibility to pay. If you have any doubts on who pays for what, or whether you can store a certain item, then contact the Logistic Support Branch at Div HQ.

Eligibility for storage

As a guide the following should be used to see if you, when posted, are entitled and eligible for storage facilities at public expense.

Married Accompanied and posted within the mainland of Great Britain. Furniture removals only - NO Contract storage.

Married Accompanied and posted to Northern Ireland, Shetland Isles or the Outer Hebrides - Furniture Removals OR Contract Storage - not both.

Married Accompanied and posted to North West Europe and intending to use the North West Europe Furniture Removals Service, organised by the Government Freight Agent - Furniture Removals only. No Contract Storage.

Married Accompanied and posted to overseas locations (including North West Europe) and using the normal Unaccompanied Baggage Service organised by the Government Freight Agent - Movement of Unaccompanied Baggage (including certain furniture items) and Contract Storage if required.

When can I move items into store?

You may remove your possessions to store once a Posting Order authority has been issued and the entitlement and eligibility to storage facilities at public expense is known. However, the Army will only pay for the removals to store and storage 14 days before you depart from the United Kingdom on your Posting. Likewise, upon your return to the United Kingdom, storage charges will continue to be paid by the Army for up to 28 days after your arrival in the country. If you have not completed the necessary arrangements to have your possessions removed from storage, you will be responsible for paying any further charges raised for storage by the contractor.

How do I apply for storage?

Application Forms (Application for Contract Removal to Storage) are held by Unit Administration Office staff. The forms, once completed by the individual applying to use the contract and his unit, are forwarded direct to the Logistic Support Branch at Div HQ.

Guidance notes for personnel wishing to use the contract

Guidance Notes for personnel who wish to use the contract storage system are held by the Logistic Support Branch. Upon receipt of the application form a copy of the Notes are sent direct to the applicant. The Notes cover all problems or eventualities and give contact telephone numbers of the Contractor and the Logistic Support Branch.

Liaison with the storage contractor

The details of the person requesting storage will be passed to the contractor, who in turn will arrange a visit; he will wish to see the total amount of the possessions intended for store in order that he can estimate the scope of the removal and storage task and allocate his resources accordingly.

Duties of the contractor

The contractor, under the terms of the contract, has to provide all labour and materials necessary for the proper and efficient packing, removal and storage of household furniture and effects, and, at the end of the storage period, deliver to destination, unload, unpack and reposition as necessary at the delivery point. Insurance is included within the contract and is highlighted in the Guidance Notes. It does preclude certain items for which you must make your own arrangements and pay for any cover obtained yourselves.

Do I have to pay anything for the removals and storage?

If you remain within the guidelines there will be no need for you to pay anything. However, if you wish the contractor to store items or to provide insurance for articles not included within the contract, or, you go over and above the storage entitlement of 2,4OO cubic feet (67.92 cu m), then you may be liable to pay any charges raised by the contractor.

Removals from store

At the end of your overseas tour, and if posted back to the United Kingdom, your new unit will, if requested, send a form "Removals from Store". The form when complete is to be sent direct to the storage contractor, who will make the necessary arrangements to have your possessions delivered to your new address at the date and time of your choice.

Contractor's invoicing arrangements

The contractor's invoices (for items within entitlement only) for removals and storage are forwarded direct to the Logistic Support Branch for payment. Payment of invoices for any item or service provided by the contractor which is outside the scope of the contract, is the responsibility of the person requesting the service.
