Do I have to be very technical or a graduate to join the Royal Signals?

No and no. However, as an officer working within a technical environment you should have an interest in technology but there is no requirement to have a PhD in communications prior to applying! The Troop Commanders' Course will provide you with a basic understanding and will stand you in good stead to tackle Royal Signals Troop Command. In-Service degrees are available for non-graduates from a selection of universities.

Can you describe a typical Royal Signals Officer?

No. Royal Signals Officers come from all walks of life and no two are the same. All officers possess the leadership, resourcefulness and confidence to lead their soldiers in the most demanding of situations, both on and off operations.

Is the Royal Signals keen on Adventurous Training and sport?

As a Corps, the Royal Signals prides itself on it diversity of role and this extends to Adventurous Training (AT) and the sports field. From sailing around the world to trekking across Greenland, the Royal Signals will offer you a challenge like no other when it comes to AT, plus all major and minor sports are successfully represented and competed in at the highest level.

What is unique about commanding Royal Signals Soldiers?

Royal Signals soldiers are highly intelligent and from the top of potential recruits, commanding soldiers of such high calibre offers its own rewarding challenge.

Are there opportunities to serve with other Arms?

Yes. Uniquely, following the first two years, attachments to other Arms are available, including to the Infantry as a Platoon Commander, to the Cavalry as a Regimental Signals Officer, flying tours with the Army Air Corps and tours with the Intelligence Corps and Royal Artillery.

Will I get Operational Experience?

The Royal Signals are involved in all operational theatres due to the indispensable role they play across the entire battlefield. On operations your drive, motivation and leadership will be fully tested to ensure your mission is achieved.

What does a Fam Visit involve?

They run for 24hrs and it's a great chance to learn more about the Royal Signals, the jobs we do and the operational capability we provide. We run command tasks and discussion groups to give you the chance to receive feedback prior to attending the AOSB! It is also a great opportunity to experience life in an Officers' Mess and meet some Troop Commanders who have recently commissioned from Sandhurst. Afterwards you may be offered sponsorship which will give you a point of contact throughout the selection procedure and also a friendly face once at Sandhurst!
