Conditions of Service - Healthcare

As a Regular soldier or on Full Time Reserve Service (FTRS), you are entitled to receive free medical and dental care to a standard at least as high as that in the NHS.

Guidelines

  • Defence Secondary Care Agency targets are as follows:
  • For a first outpatient appointment - 45% to receive a date within 4 weeks of referral and 85% to receive a date within 13 weeks of referral.
  • For in-patient treatment - 75% to receive a date within 13 weeks of the decision to admit.  
  • There are no waiting times for emergency or urgent cases, but they will be prioritised, depending on individual circumstances.
  • If you are ill at home or in a civilian hospital and unable to return to a unit, you should notify your unit immediately.

Bullet Point Unit Medical Centre - Primary care is provided by Unit Medical Officers, who may be uniformed or civilian.

Bullet Point Hospital Care - Secondary care is provided in hospitals, either as an in-patient or as an outpatient.

Bullet Point Dental Care - Dental Care is provided by the dentists and surgery staff of the Defence Dental Agency.

Bullet Point Occupational Healthcare - The Army provides a full occupational healthcare service, either through your Unit Medical Officer or through an Occupational Physician.
