As well as being able to join the Corps of Army Music as a direct entrant an exciting new scheme is now available for aspiring performing musicians who are attending or are about to attend music colleges.
The scheme is available to student applicants who are undertaking a suitable music course which has an emphasis on performance. The course can be at a college of Further or Higher Education, or a University.
On offer is a yearly Bursary paid in three instalments to help with the expenses of study for a period of up to three years or in some cases four years for a course that leads to a nationally recognised diploma or degree.
On completion of the training there is the possibility of a career in one of the army bands. This is of course dependent on applicants meeting and signing up to the exacting requirements.
It is your responsibility, as an applicant for a bursary, to obtain a place on a suitable music course. This will be subject to verification and you must produce evidence of an existing, confirmed or provisional place when you apply to your local Armed Forces Careers Office.
On completion of your studies you have a good chance of being offered a job in a high quality band. However, before joining a band you will be required to complete your initial military training (phase one) to equip you with the necessary survival skills should they ever be required.
Having completed this training, which is followed by a period of music consolidation training (phase two), you will be required to give a return of military service in order to amortise your bursary costs. If you cannot fulfil this obligation, you must repay the grant made to you. If you are not offered a job, you will have no liability to repay any of the bursary costs. This requirement will have been made very clear to you at the recruitment stage, prior to receiving the bursary, when you will have had to sign up to a legal document, described as a "Form of Undertaking".
