History

A (The Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry) Squadron

A (Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry) Squadron, based in Swindon, is one of the Royal Yeomanry’s two NBC squadrons acting as reserves to the Joint NBC Regiment.

The squadron pioneered many of the British Army’s chemical detection techniques and some of the soldiers who carried out the early development of chemical detection tactics are still serving today, making A Squadron one of the most experienced NBC squadrons in the British Army. A Squadron focus on training on Fuchs.

The squadron trains primarily to provide vitally important decontamination skills, and secondly to provide reinforcements for chemical and nuclear reconnaissance. The squadron is currently located at Church Place, Swindon, where squadron members practice a wide range of skills, from driver training to specialised NBC detection tasks. Training is regularly conducted on stripped-down Land Rover Scout Cars.

Raised originally in 1794, the squadron has a long and varied history, spanning the Boer War, two World Wars and, most recently, a two week training exercise in Alabama, USA. Plans are in place to return to USA in 2002.

The squadron has an active sporting and social life, with members of the squadron playing football, sailing, skiing or riding.
