The Royal Corps of Signals can currently boast the top 4 male players in the Army, plus 2 female soldiers ranked in the top 6. There are various events that make up the calendar of this winter season sport and on paper we are by far the strongest of the Corps teams. However, recent successes at Corps level have not been as consistent as it should have been in recent years due to operational commitments taking away our better players over key competition dates.
The Badminton season starts in Sept/Oct with each Division holding their own championships, attracting entries from local units.
Each Corps then hosts their own Championships in Oct/Nov. The Royal Signals Championships have been hosted for the past three years by 2 Signal Regiment, York. The tournament normally runs over 3 or 4 days, depending on the number of participants. Entries have varied from 40 to 70 in recent years and all standards have been welcome. Players range from county standard to novice and there are various events to suit all abilities.
The Army Badminton Championships are normally held at 5 Regt RLC (Grantham). This is a competition that is traditionally held at the start of February and runs over the course of a week. All entries are welcome and there are events to suit all standards. Do not be put off by the title of this competition, as an example there were 60 entries in the novice singles competition which the Corps won!
The season culminates in the Combined Services event which is held at the beginning of March and the host service is rotated each year. The Royal Signals make up a large part of the Army squad. There are 3 male players in the top 8 in the combined services squad. As well as these competitions there are coaching weekends and matches. The Army run coaching courses for those who wish to improve their game and set up clubs at their units. A lot of players also play in civilian clubs and our better players train with county teams. After recent British successes at the Commonwealth games and recent World Championships there has been increased media attention, to support this there were around 200 entrants for the last Army Championships, this sport is definitely growing in popularity.
