Royal Signals Windsurfing

RACING

The Corps Colours

ArmyChampsWindsurfingJul07

There are numerous race events in which the Royal Signals team competes throughout the year. These are:

The Inter-Corps Series Championships - This is a series of 6 days racing against other Corps' that combine to give an annual result. 3 of the days racing are combined with the other 3 main Championships throughout the year as described below. The season starts in September and goes through to the final event the following July.

The Forces Open Championships - This is a 2 or 3 day event normally held in April/May. It allows competitors from all 3 services to compete individually with each other. All disciplines, including course racing, slalom, master blaster and long distance racing are included in the program.  This event also combines a day for the Inter-Corps Series Champioships team racing.

The Army Championships - This is a week long event that includes racing at all disciplines, weather permitting. It includes individual and team competitions as well as a day for the Inter-Corps Series.

Race Training - The Corps Team often conducts team race training prior to the Inter-Corps Series races.

NOVICE RACING

A sailor is classed as a novice for a year from first learning to windsurf, providing they have been on the water regularly since learning.  After the first year, they are moved up into the Intermediate Class.  After the second year of sailing regularly, they can compete in the Open Class or the Formula Class.  Each Class has its own rules for the type of equipment and sail sizes that they can use, so as to keep the competition equal.

The Corps windsurfing priority is focussed at our novice and intermediate fleet.  The vision is to improve the novice and intermediate sailors over a period of time and progress them to their best ability, eventually reaching a level where they can compete in racing in competition with the main Formula fleet.

If you would like to compete (any level of windsurfer is welcome) then please get in touch.  There is no reason to feel intimidated or out of place, we are always pleased to welcome all novices and intermediate sailors turning up for events.  Don't worry if you don't think you are up to it, as there are novices competing all the time. Very often, many who start a race do not actually get to finish, due to running out of time - It is not time wasted - it is time on the water improving your windsurfing.  Why not have a go?

Equipment

The Corps has just purchased some excellent racing equipment including Starboard Formula boards and 10.8m rigs, which puts the racing team on an equal footing when competing with the other Corps'.  We have a number of other (more forgiving) racing boards for those sailors racing with the Formula fleet for the first season.
