The Air Formation Signals Association

The Air Formation Signals Logo The Association was originally formed in 1985 on an 'ad hoc' basis for a number of members of 15th Air Formation Signals who met in Nottingham (and, later, Crewe) for annual dinners. In 1993 the majority of those members voted not to continue due to their 'advancing years'! However three stalwarts set about recruiting new members, initially those who had served in 12th, 15th and 18th Air Formation Signals but quickly extended to welcome those who had served in other Air Formation Signal units. An inaugural dinner of the revived association was held in Bath in October 1994 and reunion dinners have been held each year ever since although the venue has since moved to a more central location. At the AGM in 2005 members agreed unanimously that those who served in Air Support Singal Units should be eligible for membership of the Association. By mid 2007 there were 300 active members and 35 widows.

Remembrance.

The Association has created an 'Air Formation Signals Crescent' at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire, as a focus for remembrance. On Sunday, May 9th, 2004, members attended a service where a crescent of nine copper beech trees was dedicated to the mememory of all who served in Air Formation Signal units from 1917 to the present day. On Saturday, May 12th, 2007 a tenth tree was planted and dedicated to all those who served in Air Support Signal Units. On Saturday, May 10th, 2008, the crescent was completed when a rock from the Blandford Camp roundabout, bearing a suitably inscribed plaque, was dedicated. Each Commanding Officer of 21st Signal Regiment is invited to become Branch President and Mr Gerald Evans officiates as Branch Vice-President when the President is unable to be present. In 2004 the Rev Jim McManus was invited to become Association Chaplain. In early 2007 a Branch Standard was purchased and that was dedicated on May 12th, 2007. The Association Standard Bearer is Mr Chris Collier.

A newsletter is published two or three times each year and the editor always welcomes items for publication (For his contact details, click on the 'To Join our Association' link below).

The Association is affiliated to the Royal Signals Association. No membership fees are required although donations towards administrative costs are always welcome. Membership is open to all who served (at any time) in any Air Formation or Air Support Signals unit.

A number of members are keen radio amateurs who operate 'Special Event' amateur radio stations at Colerne, home of 21st Signal Regiment, usually during June each year.
