98 (Balkans) Signal Squadron

The Corps Colours

98 Signal Squadron has been mobilised.

On 17th March 2003, the squadron, primarily made up from volunteers serving with the TA units of 11 Signal Brigade, was formally mobilised. Once deployed it will include regular and reserve personnel from the British forces, alongside members of the Dutch, New Zealand and Canadian forces. The squadron will be responsible for delivering the Royal Signals effort across Bosnia and Kosovo.

Squadron Background

11 Brigade Badge Following in the footsteps of 2 (National Communications) Signal Brigade , 11th Signal Brigade agreed to create a composite TA squadron for mobilisation to the Balkans in 2003.

The trawl for volunteers first went out to all the TA units of 11 Signal Brigade in the Spring of 2002. Initially selected squadron members then met for the first time in September 2002, although changes in personnel meant that the most recent members joined just days before we mobilised.

The role of the squadron has also evolved since its conception last year. Originally the aim was to provide communications for the BRITFOR operation in Bosnia, in the same way as 97 (BRITFOR) Signal Squadron did before us. However the much publicised downsizing of troops in the Balkan region has meant that 98 Signal Squadron has now become a Multinational Pan-Balkan operation, in support of NATO operations across the region.
