| Welcome to the 40th (Ulster) Signal Regiment Public Website. This Website is primarily aimed at members of the public, including potential recruits to the Regiment. It provides outline information about our roles, the locations within Northern Ireland from which we train, and a flavour for the kind of activities that we are engaged in.
40th (Ulster) Signal Regiment is an exciting and active unit, with an important primary role supporting military commanders with Information and Communications Services (ICS) in the event of a civil contingency. This requires us to keep a range of people and equipment available to deploy at short notice, and relies upon TA soldiers being prepared to react to an emergency call at short notice. The Regiment continues to supply a small number of personnel as Individual Reinforcements to the ongoing operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo. In April 2010, up to 120 members of the Regiment will deploy to Cyprus for a six month tour, ‘holding the line’ as part of the United Nations contingent there. While there is currently no compulsory deployment of TA soldiers to operations (and if you are in full-time education, you cannot be compulsorily mobilised), if you are considering joining the Regiment, we would normally expect you to volunteer for an operational tour within five years of doing so.
The Regiment holds a range of commercial and military communications and Information Technology equipment, and conducts frequent exercises, sometimes with the emergency services or related civil contingency organisations. Most personnel attend training with the Regiment for a two week ‘camp’, between 4 and 20 weekend exercises, and most Tuesday evenings throughout the year.
Within its training programme, the Regiment provides a wide range of training opportunities for soldiers, including foreign travel. In October 2007, the Regiment deployed over 50 people to Italy on an exercise which involved a Battlefield Study, Adventure Training and an Initiative Exercise in Rome. In June 2008, over 90 personnel will spend two weeks in Gibraltar, conducting military, communications and adventure training. In September 2009, half of the main Summer Camp will be spent in France. Smaller excursions in 2007 / 2008 have included a ski expedition to Bavaria, and a canoe expedition to France. Five members of the Regiment will conduct exchanges to the US National Guard during 2008.
There are plenty of opportunities in 40th (Ulster) Signal Regiment to meet your aspirations, whatever your background.
