Regimental Headquarters

The Corps Colours

Divisional Sign

3 Div Logo

Formation signs were introduced early in 1940, patterns being decided by the General Officer Commanding. Major General Bernard Montgomery chose the well known sign, shown above, of three black triangles surrounding an inverted red triangle. The 'pattern of three' represented the Third Division, composed of three infantry brigades, each of three battalions. Initially the sign was used only on vehicles, but later it became standard wear on battle dress. The 'Tricorn' sign continues to be used by 3 (UK) Division.

Regimental Headquarters

Regimental Headquarters is the heart of the Regiment. It is here that the Commanding Officer (a Lieutenant Colonel) and his staff control the Regiment, with the aid of many of the departments in Headquarters (The Somme) Squadron. For this page Regimental Headquarters will consist of the Commanding Officer, the Second in command (a Major), the Adjutant (a Captain or Major) and the Regimental Sergeant Major (a Warrant Officer Class 1)

Regimental Headquarters Roles

The roles of the following are complex and often overlap. To save you from reading vast paragraphs, their roles have been simplified.

Commanding Officer (CO)

The CO is responsible for all aspects of the Regiment, from ensuring the welfare of his troops, to ensuring discipline is maintained. Obviously it would be impossible for him the keep an eye on everything, so he employs a number of subordinates and departments to oversee different areas. Most of these departments, such as Unit Welfare Officer or 202 Squadron headquarters, are detail elsewhere on this site.

Second in Command (2IC)

The 2IC ensures the Regiment runs properly and looks after Regimental security matters. He also has the responsibility of command during the CO's absence.

Adjutant (Adjt)

The Adjt acts as an aide to the CO and is responsible for manning and discipline.

Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM)

The RSM is the highest ranking enlisted soldier in the Regiment and is responsible for discipline and the maintaining of values and standards.
