Organisation
Background
The previous organisation of the Scottish Division had 6 Regular and two TA Regiments each of one battalion:
- 1st Battalion the Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment)
- 1st Battalion The Royal Highland Fusiliers (Princess Margaret’s Own Glasgow and Ayrshire Regiment)
- 1st Battalion The King’s Own Scottish Borderers
- 1st Battalion The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment)
- 1st Battalion 1st Battalion The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise’s)
- 52nd Lowland Regiment
- 51st Highland Regiment
In 2004, it was announced that the current provision of Infantry capability through the Arms Plot system - the mechanism by which battalions move and re-role every 2 to 6 years - is to ‘congeal’ and the number of Infantry Battalions was to reduce. The background, key decisions and outcome for the future Infantry are found in an extract of the Chief of The General Staff’s letter. For the Scottish Division this involved the formation of Royal Regiment of Scotland consisting of 5 Regular and two TA Battalions. The reduction of one Regular Battalion will be achieved by merging the battalions of the Royal Scots and Kings Own Scottish Borderers Regiments.
Naming
Her Majesty the Queen has agreed that the names of our Battalions from Formation Day will be as follows:
When the Kings’ Own Scottish Borderers Battalion move to Edinburgh in late summer 2006 and merge with The Royal Scots Battalion they will become The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland
Regimental Headquarters
The new RHQ will be in Edinburgh Castle. In principle the new RHQ will deal with matters which pertain to the running of the new Regiment and the RHQs of the antecedent regiments, which will probably change their names to Home Headquarters. They will continue to deal with those matters which are more properly dealt with by those familiar with the ways of the old regiments.
