Corporal William Lendrim VC

Corporal

Corporal Lendrim enlisted into the Royal Sappers and Miners in 1845 at the age of 15 as a Bugler.

He set sail for the Crimea in 7th Company in his trade of miner, landing at Gallipoli in April 1854 where he took part in the fortification works on the Gallipoli penisula. He reached the Crimea in November 1854 shortly after the battle of Inkerman. His mining skills were immediately in great demand in the trenches and he quickly made his mark for his initiative and steadiness under fire.

On 14 February Corporal Lendrim was supervising a French working party on a Battery in the Second Parallel of the Right Attack. The Russian artillery soon found the range of this work, as the newly placed gabions showed up against the snow, and began to knock down the gabions with round shot, causing several causalities among the French. Corporal Lendrim took over and went from gap to gap replacing the heavy gabions under a heavy fire. The French officer in charge, who saw the whole affair, reported to Lendrim's officer that his action had saved the battery. The incident subsequently formed part of his VC citation:

“Recommended for intrepidity - getting on top of a magazine and extinguishing sandbags which were burning, and making a breach under fire, on 11 April 1855. For courage and praiseworthy example in superintending 150 French Chasseurs, on 14 February 1855, in building No 9 Battery, left attack, and replacing the whole of the capsized gabions under a heavy fire. Was one of four volunteers for destroying the farthest rifle-pit on 20 April”.
