Common Military Syllabus (Recruit)

14 Week Program

Week 1

Arrival and induction briefing

This week consists of administration to induct the recruit into the Army Training Regiment as well as completing an initial physical fitness assessment. The new recruits will deploy on Exercise Ice Breaker which is their introduction to living in the field.

Week 2

drill forms the basis for team work

The recruits’ training consists mainly of learning about the SA80 5.56mm Rifle, foot drill and basic fieldcraft skills.

Week 3

Ex First Nights

 During week 3 the recruits undergo further weapons training, foot drill as well as carrying out a short tactical field exercise to practise their skills already acquired and to further build their knowledge.

Week 4

Visiting the Battlefields of France

Week four will see the recruits fire the rifle for the first time on the 25 metere ranges to group and zero their weapons.  The recruits also embark on a Realities Of War, (battlefield tour) to the Somme or to Ypres.

Week 5

Live Firing Ranges

This week the recruits continue to work on the live firing ranges building up confidence in weapon handling and accurate firing of the rifle. The recruits also start working on their practical map reading to ensure they are each competent in basic navigation.

Week 6

He s dead

The recruits concentrate on two key areas of their training, firstly practical first aid to enable them to deal with basic casualty scenarios and Physical Training, which continues to improve their strengh and endurance.

Week 7

Forge drill 3

Drill plays an important role within the recruit’s training to instil not only discipline but also to foster teamwork to ensure the troop works as one. The recruits have to pass a drill test prior to them departing for a well earned long weekend leave.

Week 8

Sig Townsin. Ex Halfway

This is primarily a testing week for the recruits, where they deploy on a four day field-based exercise and they are assessed on all their fieldcraft skills as well as map reading and first aid.

 

Week 9

Hill walking

During week 9 the recruits leave the ATR and depart to the Peak District to carry out Leadership And Inititive Training (adventurous training). Here they are given the opportunity to kayak, climb, mountain bike and hill walk.

Week 10

 This week the recruits undergo training in order to teach and practice the skills necessary for a soldier to carry out protection measures against a chemical, biological or nuclear (CBRN) attack. They carry out further first aid training and coutinue to advance with their rifle drill

 

Week 11

Shooting camp 2

This is another week where the recruits are on the live firing ranges they also have another chance to practise their administration in the field over night.

Week 12

week 12 tests many disciplines

This is another week where the recruits are tested in many disciplines, from map reading and first aid, to physical fitness and CBRN.

 

Week 13

soldiers must rest whenever the opportunity arises

The recruits deploy to Sennybridge in Wales, and conduct a 6 day tactical field exercise to confirm all the skills they have learnt during their training. This is an arduous exercise during where the soldiers are put under the pressure of being able to soldier under tiredness and mental and physical fatigue. It is one of the biggest challenges of the Phase 1 training, but invariably the most enjoyable and memorable for the recruit.

Week 14

 

This is the final week of training where the recruits are finally assessed for their readiness to pass out of the ATR and move on to their Phase 2 of training which is their special to arm trade training. Much of the week is spent in preparation for their pass off parade.
