The Squadron was first formed in March 1857 as a General Service Company at the end of the Crimean.
In 1878 the Company was re designated as a Field Company under Captain Bindon Blood and in 1879 it was ordered to South Africa on active service in the Zulu War. There it was employed on military engineering tasks including the construction and maintenance of the Tugela Bridge. The Company's involvement in the Zulu War led to the adoption of the Zulu Warrior as the Squadron emblem.
After the Zulu Warit reroled as a Submarine mining Company and then the Fortress Company for Devonport and Plymouth up to 1933, when it was disbanded to be reformed as a Searchlight Company and moved to Singapore as the Fortress Company. It remained there until 1941 when it was disbanded again.
In April 1951, 30 Field Squadron was re-formed at El Balah, Egypt as part of 35 Field Engineer Regiment where it remained until January 1953 when it moved to Cyprus. After a tour involving a considerable amount of earthquake relief work the Squadron moved to Ripon during Christmas 1955.
In 1956 during the Suez crisis the Squadron again changed roles and became the port operating Squadron for Port Said. It returned to Ripon until 1957 when it moved to Osnabruck, West Germany, as part of 35 Corps Engineer Regiment where it remained until 1964 when it moved to Hameln.
In 1966 the Squadron deployed to Aden for 6 months and assisted in the construction of the Wadi Tayan Road.
In 1970 it moved to Hohne as part of 32 Engineer Regiment during the rationalisation of the Corps in BAOR. From November 1971 to March 1972 the Squadron served in Northern Ireland on an emergency tour as the first Field Squadron to be under command 8 Infantry Brigade in Londonderry. This tour was followed by another in the Infantry role with 32 Engineer Regiment from March to June 1976.
The Squadron moved to Iserlohn, in September 1977 as part of 26 Engineer Regiment when it became 3 Armoured Division Engineer Regiment. The Squadron has had various roles since 1977, which have included general and close support and as part of the Harrier Support Force. It has also completed a Falkland Islands tour in 1982 and 2 further tours of Northern Ireland, an Op WIDGEON tour in 1986 and an Op DESCANT tour in 1989. The Squadron provided a field troop, 4 field sections, and many individual reinforcements for the Gulf War, Op GRANBY, to 73 Field Squadron and 23 Engineer Regiment.
On 31 March 1992 the Squadron was disbanded under Options for Change.
The Squadron was officially reformed on 21st April 2004 at Corunna Barracks, Ludgershall in Wiltshire. |
