THE DISPLAYSThe displays illustrate the history of the Corps of Royal Engineers and its work around the world in peace and war. Notable items include a scale model of the Rock of Gibraltar made just after the Great Siege of 1779 - 1782, the Duke of Wellington's battle map of Waterloo, the silk court dress presented to General Gordon by the Chinese Emperor, the sole surviving Brennan Torpedo, a dug out on the Western Front from the First World War and a Medway family home in the blitz of the Second World War. |
 |
The development of military aviation, diving, survey, photography and bridging is covered. There are realistic sound effects, working models, interactive displays and full - sized equipment.
The medal collection is of national, if not international, importance with 25 Victoria Crosses, 3 George Crosses, the regalia of Field Marshal Lord Kitchener and unique gallantry awards from the Falklands War.
A quick tour of the galleries requires 11/2 hours, a detailed tour up to 4 hours. For most people there is too much to take in on a single visit.
