The training of a Royal Engineer is carried out in three separate stages:

| Soldier Training |
|
During your Soldier Training you will be taught Basic Soldiering Skills such as Weapon Handling, Fieldcraft, First Aid, Drill and Physical Training to name a few.

|
Depending on your age at the time of joining and also the Trade you wish to pursue determines which of the following three locations you will be sent to:
- Army Foundation College in Harrogate, Yorkshire
- Army Development Course in Bassingbourn, Hertfordshire
- Army Training Regiment in Lichfield, Staffordshire

| Combat Engineer Training |
|
While on the course you will be taught such things as Water Supply, Demolitions, Watermanship and Equipment Bridging.

Combat Engineer Training is carried out at the Combat Engineer School in Camberley, Surrey.

| Trade Training |
|
This is where you get taught your chosen trade. This could be your Driver training if you need it, or as an Electrician or Plumber for example.
The Royal Engineers offer you 18 basic trades.Depending on the Trade that you join as, your Trade Training will be conducted at one of the following four locations:
- Combat Engineer School in Camberley, Surrey
- Royal School of Military Engineering in Chatham, Kent
- Royal School of Military Survey in Hermitage, Berkshire
- Defence School of Transport in Leconfield, Yorkshire
- Defence Logistic and Supply School in Deepcut, Hampshire
