1 R ANGLIAN AFGHANISTAN MEMORIAL FUND

Memorial Fund

Established to provide for a permanent memorial to those soldiers from the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment who lost their lives serving in Afghanistan and to provide assistance to their families and those soldiers severely injured in the line of duty.

The 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, known as the ‘Vikings’ are currently deployed in Helmand Province in Afghanistan as part of 12 Mechanised Brigade’s deployment on Operation Herrick 6.

Pte Woollard

The Battalion have responsibility for the northern sector of the Province which over the last year has seen some of the fiercest fighting with the Taliban. The Vikings have over 600 soldiers deployed in the area, defending key locations from attack such as the important town of Sangin, the merchant town of Nowzad and the strategically important hydroelectric dam at Kajaki.

That progress has not been without the human cost. On a daily basis the Battalion has been engaged with Taliban forces who continue to try and prevent the establishment of the rule of law and impose their will on the population.

To date, the Battalion has lost 9 soldiers and a further 50 have been wounded in battle. Some of the most seriously injured will have their lives changed. The most serious incidents have included the loss of limb due to explosive incidents, gun shot wounds and fragmentation wounds from explosive projectiles.

Pte Matt Woollard (pictured right) who lost part of his right leg after he stood on an anti-personnel mine. He spent 8 weeks in Selly Oak Hospital at Birmingham and is currently attending a programme of rehabilitation. He aims to resume a full military career in due course.
