ATO 'hobby' badge

Ammunition Technical Officers generally join the Regiment as newly qualified Captains having completed an intensive 14 month course at the Royal Military College of Science and the Army School of Ammunition and take command of one of the Regiment's EOD troops in the UK or Germany.

During their two year posting, they are likely to be deployed on one or more six month expeditionary tours. Officers are currently serving in Afghanistan, Iraq, Northern Ireland, Canada and anywhere in the world the Army requires their particular expertise.

11 EOD Regiment employs 80% of ATOs which means that during their ongoing career they will return to the Regiment to serve in a number of positions. As they gain experience they might be employed as Operations / Intelligence Officer, Squadron Commander, or in a Special Operations support role.

ATOs are unusual, in that in addition to their command role, they are still very much 'hands-on' bomb disposal experts, working as members of operational EOD teams or as members of more specialised unconventional units.

All this is in addition to the broad range of opportunities associated with officers in the Royal Logistic Corps and across the Army.
