The Royal Logistic Corps Museum Archive

The museum houses an archive which consists of a wide range of documents including: letters, photographs, diaries, manuals, maps, personal documents, Corps Journals and some unit histories. We do not hold service records. We also hold vehicle history cards for ‘B’ class military vehicles, which were formerly held at the Museum of Army Transport in Beverley, Yorkshire.

Guidance on what we hold

Whether we have the information you require or not, depends entirely on what has been donated to the museum in the past and what has survived the ravages of time. The information we can give reflects what is held in the archive and can be limited in certain areas and detailed in others. So although it does not contain an individual’s records, information about that individual may be covered by other more general documentation. A useful tool is the digitised Corps Journals and Corps Histories which have the advantage of being electronically searchable. Certain individuals may be mentioned in the Journals if they were noteworthy for some reason for example, for sport, participation in a particular episode of conflict or some other event, festival or parade.

Enquiry Procedure

Before contacting us:

1. Only enquire about The Royal Logistic Corps and its four forming corps (which are no longer in existence):

The Royal Army Service Corps / Royal Corps of Transport
The Royal Army Ordnance Corps
The Royal Pioneer Corps
The Army Catering Corps

The Royal Engineers Museum can be contacted for enquiries related to the Postal and Courier Section of the Royal Engineers.

2. Please tell us the information that you already know. It will increase the likelihood of finding the information you require. For example, if you are enquiring about an individual soldier and you gave us information from his service record, we could augment it with information about his Company or unit.
3. If you would like to view items in the archive, please note The archives are available by appointment only. If you arrive without an appointment there is no guarantee we will be able to find the information that you require.

Enquiries by Mail

Our resources are limited. Enquiries will only be dealt with which are received by post. Unfortunately we can not accept enquiries by email. It must be appreciated that, although the archives may contain no information of use to the enquirer, effort is still required to arrive at that conclusion.

Obtaining Service Records

Personal service records are not held in the Archive. Such records of individual service as survive are held by the Ministry of Defence or the appropriate Public Record Offices.

The National Archives

The National Archives at Ruskin Avenue, Kew, London holds service records for other rank soldiers discharged before 1921 and for officers serving until about 1922, although the records are not complete. It also holds war diaries for both world wars and some campaigns.

It can provide general guidance on holdings, including a useful information leaflet section, and point you to other sources. Staff are unable to undertake research, identify document references or check the content of the records for you. ID is required for a reader's ticket.

For Service up to the end of World War I

All surviving records up to discharge in 1918 are now available to the public and can be seen by written appointment at the Public Record Office at Kew.

For Service after World War I

Records are held by:

Historic Disclosures
Mailpoint 400
Kentigern House
65 Brown Street
Glasgow
G2 8EX

Historic Disclosures will only give information to the particular serviceman or woman concerned, or to his or her next of kin. There is also a fee. Enquiries must be made in writing.
