The full Ironman story

Corporal George Bear, veteran fundraiser and head of the George and Edward Bear fan club has challenged his Commanding Officer, Lt Col Jock Murdoch REME, to a double Ironman Triathlon.  The plucky bear, who has only ever once turned up for PT, made the surprising challenge having returned from his most recent operational tour in Kandahar.  "I need to raise some money for The Army Benevolent Fund and Help for Heroes, and I'm prepared to sweat a bit to do it.  I want to take on the man at the top."  Lt Col Jock, never one to turn down a physical challenge, actually checked what this involved and has started panic training.

The 7.6km swim, 360km bike and 84.4km run will take place on 13/14 September: river swimming in York, cycling from York to Grangemouth then running to Stirling, and back to Edinburgh via the Forth Bridge.  We hope a BBC Look North personality will be helping Cpl Bear across the Tyne Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
