THE FUTURE OF SOLDIERS’ ACCOMMODATION

Bedroom in Project allenby An example of how single soldiers’ accommodation will radically improve in the 21st Century was officially opened by the Under Secretary of State for Defence Ivor Caplin MP on 24th February 2005 at Swinton Barracks, Perham Down, Wiltshire.

A demonstration ‘Z-Standard’ accommodation block, which gives each soldier their own room with en-suite facilities, has been built in the Salisbury Plain camp. Thirty-six soldiers from 22 Engineer Regiment, recently returned from service in Iraq, have been selected to live in the new building so the builders and designers can evaluate
it over the next six months

The new accommodation block will pave the way for the beginning of the £7 billion Allenby/Connaught project which will redevelop Army barracks in garrisons across Salisbury Plain and Aldershot. The demonstration block has been constructed by Aspire Defence Limited, the preferred bidder for the massive project, which is a Public Private Partnership/Private Finance Initiative and will have a 35 year contract life span. It is the largest MoD estate project to date.

The three-storey demonstration block of six flats, each housing six soldiers with individual en-suite bedrooms, communal lounges and service areas, is the first of many similar blocks to be constructed across Project Allenby/Connaught within the next ten years. They will provide 11,000 single bed spaces for soldiers. The whole project will provide modern living and working accommodation for some 18,000 military and civilian personnel in the Salisbury Plain and Aldershot garrisons.
