ArmyNET Nominated for Government Computer Award

ArmyNET Since its launch in April 2004, ArmyNET (www.armynet.mod.uk), a protected Internet Website for soldiers and their families, has developed into one of the most powerful and accessible Internet portals within Government. As a result of this it has been short listed to win the annual Government Computing Award for Innovation, sponsored by BT. The award is one of the most prestigious of its kind in this arena.

From 118 projects across 73 different public sector organisations, ArmyNET has been nominated and short-listed in the category: "Best Project within an Organisation", with 3 other projects.

ArmyNET is a protected Internet Website for the Army Community, accessible worldwide. There are currently over 45,000 serving soldiers registered and using the site. Soldiers activate their account and once registered, they can then sponsor a guest to access its “open” areas. Units and organisations can establish their own pages, in order to publish information using the Army Content Management System, which is already used on the Army Website (www.army.mod.uk). In essence, ArmyNET provides the benefits of intranet on the Internet.

ArmyNET gives the Chain of Command the ability to ‘push’ operational and non-operational information to soldiers, using the latest secure Internet technologies. For soldiers, it provides unprecedented access to electronic documents (of an unclassified but official nature); pay statements, e-learning portals, message boards, secure e-mail and instant messaging plus a facility to update their own profile information to enable others to discover where they are and what jobs they are doing. In essence what is already published on the intranet, or notice board, is now accessible to soldiers via the Internet.

The short-listing of ArmyNET for this prestigious award is a significant achievement for a system developed for the Army, by the Army. The winner will be notified at an award ceremony in London on 27th April 2005.
