ARMYNET – REASONS TO BE CONNECTED
In April 2004 the British Army launched its own private Website on the Internet called ArmyNET (www.armynet.mod.uk). The site is designed to provide soldiers, Army families and sponsored civilian guests, access to information that can be published on the Internet, via a registration process. The entire architecture and infrastructure of the site has been built using proven technology and tailored to meet the needs of the soldier and family.
ArmyNET was developed to enable soldiers to access information that they would routinely have access to in barracks and the material that is published on the site is unclassified. Regimental notice boards have been built for every Regiment in the Army – moving their notice boards onto the information super highway. As long as an individual has access to the Internet, they can view and add content to their pages.
ArmyNET has been successfully deployed to support Op TELIC in Iraq. Any unit or individual deploying to Iraq can now access all the information they need to know about their deployment – from what happens when they fly from Brize Norton (or Hanover), what their accommodation will be like to an introduction in speaking Arabic. Since the Website was launched last year 38,000 soldiers have already registered and are regularly using ArmyNET, and the number of users is increasing daily.
