On Saturday 28 February 2004, the British Army’s boxing elite will take on Scotland in the Army’s charity boxing gala. The proceeds from the event will go to two charity beneficiaries, the Army Benevolent Fund and the British Forces Foundation. The event will take place at the Sir John Moore Barracks home of the Army Training Regiment Winchester, and it is hoped that over £30,000 will be raised. |

The gala is centred on a 9-bout match between the Army Amateur Boxing Team and the Scottish National Amateur Boxing Team. The match will feature an impressive line up of talented boxers. The evening will also include music by the Band of the Bugles of the Light Division and a charity auction hosted by Hugh Edmeads, the Chairman of Christies. A fantastic range of unique and sought after items will be available in the auction including boxing gloves signed by Frank Bruno, a cricket bat signed by the England team, a Real Madrid shirt signed by David Beckham, a day on board HMS Sandown and a rugby ball signed by the England World Cup winning team.
The charities have been nominated because of their links to the Forces. The Army Benevolent Fund, the Army’s national charity, is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. |

It is committed to the welfare of soldiers, serving and retired, and their families in time of need. The British Forces Foundation is a Service charity that provides morale boosting welfare, entertainment and support to Service men and women deployed on operations worldwide. Lieutenant Colonel DWH Norris OBE QDG, Commanding Officer of the Army Training Regiment Winchester said, “We are delighted to host the gala and to help raise funds for two Service Charities. I am certain that we shall see some excellent boxing”.In the Army, a full programme of boxing takes place between September and April, open to novices and those who have boxed previously at amateur clubs. The Army’s boxing team is then selected from internal competitions. Over the years, the Army Boxing team has produced many champions at Combined Service, National and International Level.
Sport and adventure training are a fundamental part of Army life as soldiers must be alert, able to react quickly and able to operate in extreme climates under extreme conditions. Servicemen and women must be physically fit, robust and confident. Sport at all levels improves leadership, fitness, teamwork and the pursuit of excellence. In addition it raises spirits, develops tactical skills, self-reliance and contributes significantly to quality of life.
