Soldiers from Lancashire's Territorial Army Royal Signals squadron took a short break from their military training to offer a helping hand to a local Cubs pack.

A group of youngsters, aged eight to 10, from 1st Walton-le-Dale St Leonard's Cubs,Preston,  needed expert help to achieve their 'Communicator badge'. Who better to pass on tips about communications than the British Army's Royal Signals!

93 Signal Squadron (Volunteers) invited the children, their parents and Cubs leaders to their training centre in Canterbury Street, Blackburn. TA soldiers showed them how the Army communicates across large areas with its Clansman radio system.

Corporal Seldon Simms, 39, from Lower Darwen, was one of the soldiers hosting the children's visit. He said:

"Most of our time is spent on military training, so it was nice to do something a little different and help this local Cub pack. The children were really enthusiastic and positive - and communicating, which is the main thing!"

Mark Bamber, Akela of 1st Walton-le-Dale pack, said:

"Up to now, the Cubs have been learning lots of things, such as Morse code and how to make calls to the emergency services. Using the radio system was the final part before achieving the Communicator badge, so we are delighted to be shown by the communications professionals from the Army. The kids have really enjoyed getting involved."
