Speaking at the event Chief of the General Staff General Sir Richard Dannatt had nothing but praise for the Army photographic profession: "All of those of us who have served on operations know the importance of Army photography – to support the Commanders of those operations in a number of ways but also to keep those back home - and nowadays worldwide – informed on what is going on, as well as to make a photographic record for the Army's historical archives.
"But Army photographers are, first and foremost, soldiers and endure the same risks as their combat arm counterparts. Tragically, that has become all to apparent with the death in Afghanistan of Corporal Mike Gilyeat, of the Royal Military Police, in May.
"As a tribute to Corporal Gilyeat, we have dedicated to his memory a new Silver Trophy to be presented to the winner of the Overall Best Image category. This will serve as a reminder not only of Corporal Gilyeat as an outstanding soldier, as a Royal Military Policeman and as an Army photographer but also to the ultimate sacrifice that he made.
"On the theme of recognition, I am also very pleased to see that this is not just about a competition but that the winning images will now form part of a permanent display here in the National Army Museum Exhibition Hall outside."
