FINAL VICTORY TO BECOME ARMY OFFICER

Prince William has passed the final hurdle in his bid to become an Army Officer. The Prince, known to his colleagues in Blenheim Company, as Officer Cadet Wales is one of nearly 300 Officer Cadets who will pass out of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst on the 15 December.

The final test in the year long Commissioning Course is a gruelling ten day Exercise called Winter Victory in Cyprus. The exercise was conducted in the Sovereign Base Area of Cyprus around the Episkopi Garrison. Cyprus is chosen because it provides the Officer Cadets with a different environment in which to operate after nearly a year of training in the UK.

The Exercise started with a beach landing from an Army Landing Craft (Landing Craft Logistics LCL) before making the hard slog in land on foot in the heat of the Cyprus sun. For the first part of the Exercise, Blenheim Company were based in a deserted village in the unforgiving environment of the Cyprus Hills. From this base they were tasked to conduct search an arrest operations, similar to those that troops are currently conducting in Iraq. They also made use of the RAF Griffin Helicopter to conduct an assault on "enemy" locations.

After three days in the relative comfort of the village Blenheim Company moved further into the hills, living and working from a makeshift camp they constructed on a hillside. Their mission was to seek out a "guerrilla" force whilst remaining undetected. Finally their camp was found by the guerrillas and the Company was forced to beat a hasty retreat back down to the village. After a day of carrying 95 pounds in temperatures of nearly 30 degrees Celsius. OCdt Wales and his colleagues were ready to prepare for the final hurdle of the Exercise.

Winter Victory culminates with an attack on the deserted village of Paramali in the Cyprus hills. Blenheim Company was chosen to attack the village whilst the other two companies (Inkerman and Waterloo) captured and secured the surrounding hilltops. Working in small teams the soldiers clear the village house to house, before providing covering fire for their colleagues on the opposite hillside.

After these 10 testing days the Officer Cadets are finally allowed to put on the head dress of their chosen Regiment.
