Reserve Riflemen feel the heat training for duties in Afghanistan 26 August 2010
6 RIFLES taking part in EXERCISE LION STAR 3 in Cyprus
More than a 100 Reserve Riflemen from 6 RIFLES – the South West’s TA Infantry battalion – braved temperatures in excess of 45 degrees and 80 per cent humidity in Cyprus during EXERCISE LION STAR 3.
The intensive two-week deployment has been designed to expose the Riflemen to the rigours of what an Afghan tour may ask of them, including helicopter-borne assaults, foot patrols with IED-detecting equipment, occupying and securing a FOB as well as countering insurgent attacks.
Several Rifleman on duty in Cyprus have recently returned from tours of Afghanistan. It's a conflict which has claimed the lives of three of their comrades – one just six months ago.
Hundreds of TA soldiers are mobilised for Afghanistan every year to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with their regular counterparts, facing the same very real dangers, before going back to their civvie jobs in banks, schools or on building sites.
