A new computer-based virtual training system was launched at MOD Abbey Wood on 11 March 2010.

The new system allows soldiers to exercise a wide range of scenarios and is used to practise tactics, techniques and team working in a virtual environment. It's being used as part of soldiers' pre-deployment training.

Captain Terry Newton said: "The modern generation of soldiers is well used to games consoles and videogames, and so picks up this simulation very quickly. For the newest soldiers who haven't been on operations before it's a good way to to build up their confidence."

"This is a fantastic tool for building up training The system is easily updated, so it features all of our modern equipment, the terrain is realistic and the enemy is quite responsive and free-thinking. Ultimately it's a simulation, it's not the real thing, but the movement, the dust and the interaction with locals is constructive and beneficial. The basic drills - verbal communications, and - for example - calling in a rescue helicopter, can be practised on the system in the same way as when we go on operations."
