Military bands are renown for their marching and wind bands, the Corps of Army Music has the added task of supplying first class string ensembles and small orchestras for various events including Royal Investitures and other State events.

The Sinfonietta is the cream of the orchestral players within the Corps of Army Music and it was formed to allow the string players within the Corps to work together, demonstrate and promote the quality of string performance within the Army.  

It gives the string players the opportunity to perform music at a level beyond that achievable within a single band with a smaller string capability.

Sinfonietta comprises musicians drawn from the 22 bands of the Corps of Army Music, and is directed by the Army's Principal Director of Music - Lieutenant Colonel Bob Meldrum MBE. 

The string players are found mainly in the London based State Bands of the Household Cavalry, Royal Artillery and Foot Guards whilst brass, woodwind and percussionists hail from as far a field as the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland in Edinburgh.
